THE AWAKENED CITIZEN PROGRAM

The Awakened Citizen Program is a three-year graded Value Education program for students in the Middle and High school, run by the Ramakrishna Mission. This programme seeks to empower students in real and tangible ways to develop as enlightened citizens who can make responsible choices. The programme has been initiated in class VI and the modules based on value education and life skills are being discussed in the online sessions held fortnightly. The modules covered in August included the following topics:

  • Developing Faith in our Infinite Possibilities.
  • Human Possibilities Available to Us.

As a part of the CACA (Children Against Child Abuse) Project, activities mentioned in My Safety Workbook were undertaken in Classes III to V to sensitise children to the right behaviour and exercise ‘CHILD RIGHTS’. A webinar on ‘My Feelings’ was also conducted.

  • They were made aware about the Child Helpline (1098) and its significance.

A webinar on the topic “Menstrual Cycle and Hygiene Management” was organised for girls of grade V and VI in collaboration with Vidya Hunt Global Foundation on 17th  November, 2021. The session was thoroughly appreciated by parents.

COUNSELLING & MENTAL HEALTH

The school counsellor collaborated with Mr. Jitin Chawla’s Centre for Career Development to discern the concerns being faced by the students in the post pandemic era. This is being done by a psychological survey being used to study the following aspects of Grade 9-12th Children : Social, Emotional, Educational and Career. The results of the large scale survey will aid in the intervention in the form of need based counselling sessions for students.

SESSION ON SERENITY

An enriching session on the topic ‘Serenity is not in freedom from the storm but peace amid the storm’ was conducted by His Eminence, the 8th  Chokyong Palga Rinpoche, a Buddhist Teacher and Philosopher, at Bal Bharati Public School, Gangaram Marg, on 18th November, 2021. The same was attended by all the Principals, Vice-Principals and Headmistresses from all units of Bal Bharati, Delhi/NCR.

  • In an attempt to win the battle against the deadly Covid 19, a set of 15 promises was shared with students and parents in the month of June, one each day to keep and follow strictly. Mind Haven, a  Mental Health initiative, was formulated to raise awareness on Mental Health and Wellness. Creatives and posters were shared with students regularly to help cater to their  well-being  in times of the pandemic. Lockdown Living, Anxiety, Stress Management, Eye Health Care, Internet Addiction were some of the topics covered.

 

  • The COVID 19 lockdown has created a totally new environment with long term effect on mental, emotional as well as physical well being of everyone, especially children. The Counselling Team has been very actively involved in providing support to students, parents and teachers through various activities:

  • Mental Health Week Celebration- To commemorate the importance of mental health and well-being and to reduce the stigma associated, Mental Health Week was celebrated in the first week of October. Daily mindful living activities were shared across classes and students were encouraged to participate wholeheartedly.

 

The Counselling Team has worked tirelessly tracking the larger emotional issues of the pandemic along with the challenges of distance learning. Handouts, Video Presentations, open phone lines and personal video calls to instil a positive mindset and offer both comfort and hope, are some of the ways adopted.

Ms. Shreya Gandhi, Ms. Saaneya Kapoor and Ms. Yashvi Bhatnagar prepared mental health modules and took interactive live sessions on Coping Skills, Minding our Minds and Art Therapy for the emotional well being of the students and staff.

  • The Counselling Team developed appropriate daily routines for students across the school to provide regularity  and discipline.
  • They initiated the Peer Mentoring programme in school in which the students who require peer support are identified and connected with trained mentors. The work done is analyzed through weekly meetings and goal worksheets.
  • Formulated a 30-Day Mental Workout for students to practice in their daily lives.
  • One on One sessions with parents along with group webinars on topics such as Positive Parenting and Nurturance, How to Look after your child during the pandemic.

  • MINDFUL MONDAYS

Mindfulness and living with a positive mindset is a guiding arrow towards building mental strength. The Counsellors work towards building holistic mental strength and well being of the students through the Mindful Monday Programme. Every Monday students are provided with positive practices and activities. They are encouraged to do deep breathing, be positive and learn how to manage different stresses of life.

 

  • GRATITUDE PROGRAM

“It is not happy people who are thankful, but thankful people who are happy”

Thankful Thursdays is a gratitude programme that aims at unlocking the blessings of life and recognising the abundance around. On Thursdays, students across classes are encouraged to share their experiences and stories of thankfulness and gratitude for different aspects of their lives. They are also guided to express their gratitude to members of their family and family helpers.

  • Each One Teach One: All the students of classes VI-X have been enrolled for the Rotary Indian Global Dream Campaign to make at least one adult literate. BBPS Pitampura, Delhi was chosen by Rotary International to participate in its ‘Each one teach one’ Project. Ms. Rachna Garg, teacher incharge of the project alongwith some selected students and their learners participated in the function organised by Rotary International at Amity University, Noida on 7th August, 2015. Vanshika and a learner Sh. Pappu Sharma also shared their views at the gathering. The function was presided over by President, Rotary International - Mr. K. R. Ravindran. This helped channelize youth energy and also makes them socially responsible.

 

  • Remedial classes for weak students of classes X to XII are held every week on Tuesday and Friday.

 

  • Mandeep Kaur, Asst. Professor of Psychology at Kamala Nehru College , Delhi University, conducted a Social Skills Intervention Programme for students with special needs from 7th to 24th December, 2015. She, along with 10 other students who are studying psychology, worked with these students for an hour every day. The areas of intervention included raising self esteem, greeting people, role plays, team work, being assertive etc. Twenty students from classes I-X were part of this programme. A Felicitation Ceremony was organized on  24th December 2015. The students with special needs staged a cultural programme prepared by the group for the parents.

 

  • Expressions India had organized a ‘National Talent Olympiad for Students with Special Needs’ on 23rd December, 2015. This non-competitive event was held at the National Science Centre. A group of seven students along with two teachers went for the event. The students participated in the following categories:
  • On the spot painting: Sandhya (class-V)
  • On the spot T-shirt painting: Sanjana (class-VII) and Vadehi (class-X)
  • Poster Making: Kanishka Middha (class-VII) and Kanishk Vats (class-X)
  • Calligraphy: Punya Mehra (class-X)
  • Singing: Jaskunwar Singh (class-VI)

All the students were awarded appreciation certificates and medals to encourage them for their efforts.
